Shingrix Vaccine:
The Shingrix vaccine is given to prevent shingles (adult chickenpox) which can be severely painful and cause long term complications including blindness. Studies have shown that Shingrix can cut the risk of shingles by more than 97%, compared with 50% for Zostavax, which has been the only offering to all Britons over 70 to date.
The Dr Sophia Khalique Medical Practice Marylebone has been importing Shingrix since 2019 from the USA where it was approved in 2018. The NHS is now going to make this available to the over 70s although it is suitable for adults aged 50 and over.
The course is split into 2 doses: the initial one and the second 2 – 6 months later. Side effects of the vaccination include a sore arm and lump around the injection site – these can last up to 10 days. Shingrix can be given same time as other vaccines. If you have had shingles or been administered Zostavax, you should still have Shingrix.
Revaxis Vaccine:
The Revaxis vaccine is given to prevent Tetanus, also known as Lockjaw, which can cause severe muscle contractions in the neck and jaw.
The bacteria can get into your body through cuts and grazes, tears or splits in the skin, eye injuries, burns, animal bites, body piercings, tattoos, and injections.
A booster is required every 10 years and it can be given same time as other vaccines. Side effects of the vaccination include a sore arm, redness or swelling of injection site however these are very rare.
